Fitness is a measure of how easily you can achieve your daily activities with ease.
You should be comfortable performing the following tasks throughout the day: such as dressing, work, domestic chores, as well as exercise and training.
There are 4 key fitness areas:
- Muscular strength and endurance
- Flexibility
- Body composition
- Aerobic fitness
An easy measure of fitness is your resting heart rate. For adults, this is between 60 and 100 beats per minute. The lower your heart rate, the fitter you are.
Take the first step now!
No matter what your starting point, improving your fitness level starts with increasing your activity level. This might be walking a bit further, taking the stairs, spending more time outdoors or increasing your training programme.
If you’re also trying to lose weight, you’ll need to decrease your kilojoule intake and increase aerobic activity, but the benefits to overall wellbeing far outweigh just losing weight.
Increasing your movement, and thus fitness, has huge health benefits including improved management and even prevention of chronic conditions like hypertension and heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, chronic pain and many other health-related conditions. If you are already moving well, find an activity you like and do it more often.
